It’s always interesting to know how many people are covered by health insurance, who’s covered, and how they’re covered. Here are some facts:


  • 67.3% of Americans have private insurance
  • The leading health insurance group is UnitedHealth Group Inc., serving over 5 million people
  • About 14.3 percent of 19 to 25 year-olds in the United States did not have health insurance in 2018
  • As of 2018, approximately 296 million people in the United States had some sort of health insurance (private, government, VA, employer, or other)
  • The average annual deductibles for employer-sponsored health insurance in the United States for an individual was $1,655
  • 66 % of millennials (those born between 1984 and 1997) have private health insurance, while 16% are uninsured
  • In 2019, among the largest companies, which have 5,000 or more workers, 50% of them offered coverage to same-sex domestic partners
  • An estimated 27.5 million people, 8.5% of the population, went without health insurance in 2018, an increase of 1.9 million uninsured people, or 0.5 percentage point
  • Between 2017 and 2018, the percentage of people covered by Medicaid decreased by 0.7 percentage points to 17.9%
  • The rate of Medicare coverage increased by 0.4 percentage points between 2017 and 2018
  • The percentage of uninsured children under the age of 19 increased by 0.6 percentage points between 2017 and 2018, to 5.5%
  • The state of Texas holds the highest rate for the number of uninsured Americans
  • The percentage of adults (in terms of ethnicity/race) who had any type of doctor’s visit within the last 12 months: 84% of whites visited a doctor, followed by 81% of blacks, 79% of American-Indian Natives, 78% of Asians, and 70% of Hispanics
